Captive portal
A captive portal is the web page a guest sees when they join a public Wi-Fi network, before they are allowed onto the internet.
Covers
Covers are the number of guests a restaurant, pub or hotel serves, counted per person rather than per table or per booking, so a table of four is four covers.
Digital loyalty card
A digital loyalty card is a stamp card or points card on a guest’s phone, in a wallet app or a venue’s own app.
First-party guest data
First-party guest data is information a hospitality business collects directly from its own guests, through bookings, Wi-Fi, orders, loyalty and sign-up forms, rather than buying it or renting access from a third party.
Guest data ownership
Guest data ownership means a hospitality business holds and controls the contact details, visit history and consent records of its own guests, rather than a booking platform or marketplace keeping them.

Guest Wi-Fi marketing
Guest Wi-Fi marketing is the practice of using a venue’s free public Wi-Fi to collect guest contact details and marketing consent, then using that data to reach those guests again.

Marketing consent
Marketing consent is a person’s clear, freely given agreement to receive marketing, recorded so it can be shown later.

A no-show deposit is a payment a restaurant or venue takes when a guest books, held against the reservation and kept or charged if the guest fails to turn up or cancels too late.
No-show rate
A no-show rate is the percentage of reservations, or booked covers, where the guest neither arrived nor cancelled.
Order and pay at table
Order and pay at table, often called QR ordering, lets guests scan a code on the table, browse the menu on their phone, order and pay by card without waiting for a server.
Per-cover fee
A per-cover fee is a charge a booking platform takes for each diner seated through a reservation, rather than a fixed subscription.
Point of sale (POS)
A point of sale, or POS, is the till system a hospitality business uses to take orders and payments, software on a terminal or tablet with card readers.
Pre-order
A pre-order is food and drink a guest chooses before they arrive, usually when they book or in the days before their visit.

Repeat visit rate
A repeat visit rate is the share of a venue’s guests who return after their first visit within a chosen period.
Review management
Review management is the process of monitoring, requesting and replying to the online reviews a business receives, such as those on Google.
Table management
Table management is the software a venue uses to plan and run its floor: which tables exist, how they combine, and which bookings and walk-ins sit where across a service.
Two-way POS integration
A two-way POS integration is a connection between a point-of-sale system and another platform in which data flows in both directions.
Unified guest profile
A unified guest profile is a single record per guest that combines everything a hospitality business knows about them, from bookings and orders to Wi-Fi logins, reviews and loyalty activity.
Walk-in
A walk-in is a guest who arrives at a restaurant, pub or bar without a reservation and is seated or served on the spot.
Wallet pass
A wallet pass is a digital card stored in a phone’s built-in wallet app, such as Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, alongside boarding passes and bank cards.
Wi-Fi opt-in rate
A Wi-Fi opt-in rate is the percentage of guests who agree to receive marketing when they log in to a venue’s guest Wi-Fi.
Win-back journey
A win-back journey is an automated series of messages sent to guests who have not returned for a while, or who cancelled, designed to bring them back.
