Network Support Engineer

We put a small box in a hotel, pub or racecourse, and from that moment their guest Wi-Fi is our responsibility. We are looking for the engineer who makes that promise true: the person who gets each site live and who is the final word when something stops working.

What we do

In plain terms.

Stampede helps hospitality venues turn their guest Wi-Fi into something useful. A guest connects, sees a branded portal, and the venue gets to know who visits and how often. Underneath that sits SNAPguard: a MikroTik box we configure and ship, which slots into a venue’s existing network between their router and their access points.

It is a genuinely nice piece of engineering with one hard constraint. The box has to work inside a network we did not build, do not own, and often cannot see. Solving that, hundreds of times over, is the job.

The role

Yours from box to online.

You own a venue’s guest Wi-Fi from the moment the box arrives to the moment guests are online, and you are the escalation point when a live site has a problem. Roughly half the job is getting new sites live and half is keeping existing ones healthy, and the balance will tip towards the first as we grow.

Today there are 246 SNAPguard boxes in the field across 80 customers. Over the next twelve months we expect to add 500 to 1,000 more. That is the reason this role exists, and it shapes how we want it done: every fix should end up in the shipped configuration or the install guide, so the next fifty sites never meet the same problem.

a go-live has four steps. we control the first and can see the last, and this role is how we reach the two in the middle.
What you would be doing

Three jobs in one.

Getting sites live

  • Work out what a venue’s network actually is before the box ships: router, switches, controller, VLANs, and who looks after each of them.
  • Tell the venue or their IT provider exactly what to configure, in writing, clearly enough that they can do it without another phone call.
  • Run the setup call yourself when a site is unusual, and improve the process so that fewer sites are.

Keeping them healthy

  • Take the technical escalations our support team cannot close, and close them.
  • Diagnose faults down the phone through whoever happens to be on site, which is usually a duty manager in the middle of service rather than an engineer.
  • Watch the fleet, chase the boxes that have gone quiet, and find out why rather than assuming.

Making the next one easier

  • Turn every repeated fault into a change to the shipped configuration, a monitoring check, or a line in the install guide.
  • Own the runbooks for the failure modes we already know by name, and write the ones for those we do not.
  • Decide which hardware goes to which kind of site, and hold that line as the fleet grows.
What we are looking for

Depth, then temperament.

Real networking depth

You can read a router configuration rather than reset it. VLANs and trunking, firewall and NAT rules, DHCP, PPPoE, routing, and tunnels are all daily vocabulary rather than things you would look up.

MikroTik and RouterOS

Or the clear ability to get there quickly from Cisco, Juniper, Draytek or similar. Our fleet is hAP ax2, cAP ax, hAP ac2 and RB5009.

Guest Wi-Fi as a system

Captive portals, RADIUS authentication and accounting, MAC authentication, walled gardens, DNS, session handling, and a sense of why a phone sometimes refuses to show a splash page.

Comfort in other people’s networks

UniFi, Omada, Meraki, Ruckus and TP-Link all turn up in front of our box. You will need to work out a topology from a short conversation and a photograph of a comms cabinet.

Wireless in awkward buildings

Stone-walled hotels, marquees, racecourses and festival fields. Coverage, roaming and channel planning, and the honesty to say when a site needs another access point rather than another reboot.

Patience with non-technical people

Getting a serial number, a photograph and an accurate description of a flashing light out of somebody mid-shift, warmly and first time, is a real skill and we treat it as one.

Clear writing

Most of this job happens in writing. The best support reply we have on file told a customer plainly that their problem was not fixed yet, why, and which two things we were waiting on. We want more of that.

Nice to have

Not essential.

  • Experience escalating faults to UK ISPs and Openreach, and the patience it requires.
  • Hospitality, retail or multi-site estates, where the network is never the priority and service always is.
  • Scripting to automate the repetitive parts, in whatever language you like.
  • A driving licence, for the small number of visits that cannot be solved remotely.
Being straight about it

The hard parts.

We would rather you knew this before applying than three weeks after starting.

  • This is an office based role. When you are not out at a venue, we expect you in Edinburgh with the team, so it will not suit anyone looking for remote or hybrid working.
  • You will often be the most knowledgeable person on the call and still not have access to the equipment causing the problem. Diplomacy matters as much as diagnosis.
  • Venues trade when offices do not. Most work sits inside normal hours, but there is a genuine out-of-hours tail and we will build a fair rota for it rather than pretend otherwise.
  • The fleet is growing faster than the process around it. You are joining to fix that, which means the first few months involve building things that should already exist.
  • You will be the first dedicated engineer in this seat. That means real ownership and no established playbook to inherit, which suits some people and not others.
