<p>It’s no secret that pubs and bars in the UK are struggling, and that many have been forced to close their doors. Challenges include rising alcohol taxes, changes to business rates and a new generation that doesn’t drink as much. That’s the narrative at least, and it’s why CAMRA continues its commendable ‘Save the Local’ campaign.</p>



<p>However, a funny thing happened in 2019. For the first time in a decade, the number of pubs and bars in the UK actually went up instead of down – according to Official Labour Market Statistics from the ONS/Nomis.</p>



<p><strong><em>Between 2010-2018, the UK had a net loss of 5,855 pubs, an average of 732 per year. However, there was a net gain of 320 pubs in 2019, the first time that the number of pubs in the UK has increased for a decade</em></strong></p>



<p>We believe that pubs and bars are of vital importance to UK society and its economy. It’s therefore imperative that we analyse these market statistics and try to understand what they mean to the licensed trade industry. Is this increase a statistical anomaly or does it signpost a reversal of fortunes for the wider industry? Perhaps it is evidence that pubs and bars have started to adjust to economic and cultural changes in the UK?&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>In this post we analyse pub growth, the regions and countries experiencing the highest net growth (and loss), the types of pubs growing fastest and some of the likely determining factors. We also look at why the upward trend doesn’t extend to licensed clubs, which continue to fall in number.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Pubs are on the rise</strong></h4>



<p>The UK has lost 732 pubs per year on average since 2010, so 2019’s net gain of 320 represents a swing of nearly 1,000 compared to previous years. This is quite a remarkable turnaround, especially given the systematic year decline this decade and numerous challenges facing pub operators.<br></p>

<p>Sadly England is almost solely accountable for this growth, which is not seen elsewhere. It saw a net gain of +345 compared to Scotland (-5) Wales (-25) and Northern Ireland (+5) which were all relatively stable. By region, the South East has the most pubs (5,340) but only grew by 10 in 2019. Much faster growth can be witnessed in the North East (+85), followed closely by the West Midlands (+80).</p>



<p>By town/city, Bristol, Newcastle, Southampton and South-end-on-sea all boast an extra 15 pubs in 2019 (the most in the UK). In London, pub numbers only increased in 10 out of 33 boroughs.</p>

<p>Large pub groups are driving the most growth in the sector. The biggest increase (+205) comes from pub enterprises with a turnover of £500,000-£1,000,000, and the second biggest increase (+125) was in the £1m-£2m bracket. By contrast, the UK had a net loss of 55 for pub enterprises with a turnover of less than £100,000&nbsp;</p>



<p>These stats demonstrate the dominance of big pub chains and suggests that larger and more profitable pubs may be more resilient to negative market forces – such as rising business rates and alcohol duties – and are therefore less likely to shut down. It may also be the case that there is more investment in larger properties with the potential to drive more revenue – while smaller venues stay shut once they close.</p>

<p>We calculate that the growth of pubs in the UK between 2018 and 2019 may have created an extra 8,975 jobs nationwide.** Using a similar formula, we calculate that pubs made an extra £740,875,000 in 2019 vs 2018 (cash turnover not adjusted for inflation)</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Source of Growth</strong></h4>



<p>As to why pub numbers are going up, additional analysis suggests that it has little to do with people drinking more. According to the same dataset, we can reveal that licensed clubs remain on the decline – there were 7,420 in 2019 vs 7,610 in 2018, down from 10,000 in 2010***. Likewise, analysis from the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) and Marston’s says beer sales volumes dropped to 3.6 billion pints in 2019 compared with a peak of 5.7 billion pints in January 2007.</p>



<p>In the same report, the BBPA noted a rise in craft and world beers, growing by 194,000 and 218,000 pints respectively. The sale of these premium beers may explain how pub numbers were able to grow in 2019. Likewise, it appears that many pubs and bars are coping better with industry challenges. Many have embraced innovation and new revenue streams. More pubs now offer food, accommodation and a greater variety of weekday events to maximise profits. Pubs can no longer afford to rely on the same old regulars to keep coming through the door.&nbsp;</p>



<p>We are seeing more pubs utilising technology, data and marketing automation to better understand their customers and their drinking habits. This means being able to generate more revenue during traditionally quiet periods and changing their operations/business hours based on how their customers behave.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The pub trade has had very little to celebrate in the last decade, but I’m sure they’ll raise a glass to these new numbers,” said Patrick Clover, Stampede founder and CEO. “Pubs have a hugely important place in our society both socially as well as economically, being one of the UK’s biggest employers. The reduction of pubs over the last decade has been heart-breaking, following devastating changes to business taxes and alcohol duties, but I hope these figures signpost a reversal of fortunes. Indeed, we saw our local district of Edinburgh increase the number of pubs significantly this year, and I like to think we played our part in that. Stampede’s aim is to become indispensable to every pub, bar, hotel and restaurant owner in the UK. We want to bring the heart back into these beloved venues that are at the centre of our communities.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>**We calculated this figure based on the net difference of pubs multiplied by their number of employees. For example, there were an extra 240 pubs with between 20-49 employees: 240 x 35 [the median figure between 20-19] = 8,400 jobs. Other employment size bands saw a net decrease, thus creating a net job loss, but they have still been factored into the 8,975 jobs estimate. N.B the ONS rounds it figures to the nearest 5 to avoid disclosure, so this figure is only a guide and should be taken with a pinch of salt.&nbsp;</p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1) Multiple Subscriptions</strong></h6>



<p>With multiple systems come multiple subscriptions. Quite often you’ll find&nbsp;<strong>overlapping features</strong>. Your booking system might allow you to send email reminders, and so does your CRM.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This means, you’re paying twice for the same feature but only using one.</p>



<h6 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2) Multiple Systems</strong></h6>



<p>If you use multiple systems, you have to find a way to make them talk to each other to&nbsp;<strong>ensure accessibility</strong>&nbsp;for everyone using the data.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For many businesses, this is still a&nbsp;<strong>manual task</strong>. Downloading and uploading spreadsheets is not only time-consuming but also comes with a certain security hazard.</p>



<h6 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3) GDPR Compliance</strong></h6>



<p>How do you&nbsp;<strong>ensure data security</strong>&nbsp;when you sync data? And how do you make sure that your customer data is always up to date in every system?</p>



<p>Handling data across various tools always increases the&nbsp;<strong>potential risk of a GDPR breach</strong>, even more so when done manually with CSV and spreadsheets downloaded to PCs and laptops.</p>

<p>The way data is stored on each platform differs. Take phone numbers for example. Some systems&nbsp;<strong>format the data</strong>&nbsp;as ‘0044’, others as ‘+44’. In theory, this is not the same number, so two contacts might be created for the same customer.&nbsp;</p>



<p>If you don’t spot those&nbsp;<strong>duplicates</strong>, the same customer will get your messages twice or possibly more. Which, of course, won’t be appreciated by your customer.</p>



<h6 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>5) Internal Communication&nbsp;</strong></h6>



<p>Another issue&nbsp;applies to companies operating&nbsp;<strong>multiple venues</strong>. Your individual venues might have access to the booking data but not to the overall CRM data which is handled by your HQ.</p>



<p>Both entities can now work on the same customer profile, i.e. sending campaigns, without being aware of it.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This, again, increases the likelihood of&nbsp;<strong>duplicates being created and outdated customer profiles</strong>. And both scenarios can have a negative impact on your customer experience.&nbsp;</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>How To Overcome Data Integration Challenges</strong></h5>

<p>Many venues have struggled due to changes to business rates, rising alcohol taxes and digital competition from food delivery services. It is also thought that many young people do not go to pubs and bars as often as previous generations.</p>



<p>To compete in a challenging market, CRU needed creative marketing solutions to optimise the performance of its venues and automate as much of the process as possible. Its main objectives were to:</p>

<p><strong>Email and SMS</strong> – A vital way in which Stampede helped CRU improve customer loyalty and generate customer visits was via automated email &amp; SMS such as:</p>

<li><strong>Frequency Triggers</strong> – eg. a free beer, glass of wine or cocktail after the first visit. Free food after 10 visits.</li>



<li><strong><em>Left Venue</em> Trigger</strong> – e.g £5 off when you spend £25 next time.</li>

<p>These triggers enabled CRU to automate most of its marketing outreach and provide highly targeted promotions to its customers. This approach saved CRU valuable time and resources, and also improved the conversion rates of its campaigns considerably.</p>



<p><strong>Upsell</strong> – Stampede displays promotions direct to customers’ mobile devices whenever they return to CRU venues. Similar to Instagram Stories, these promotions would include:</p>

<p>By beaming promotions directly to customers’ devices, CRU can inform visitors of deals and events without the cost and hassle of printing paper fliers and promotions each time. This is a more measurable, instantaneous and eco-friendly alternative to physical promotions and allows CRU to experiment with different promotions depending on their specific need that day. For example, if one CRU venue is significantly quieter than another on a Friday night, it can offer customers a drinks deal at the other location.</p>

<p>The digital promotions created with Stampede have had a significant impact on CRU’s financial success, as well as how it operates its venues day-to-day.</p>



<p>They have enabled CRU to track which events and deals resonate with its customers and make better future decisions based on real-world data. This data has helped CRU optimise its venues and create the weekly and monthly event/promotion schedule it uses today. This also acts as a framework for use in all future venues to ensure they can replicate the same success.</p>



<p>The best-performing campaign sent <strong>280 automated offers</strong> to Scotch &amp; Rye customers 60 seconds after leaving the venue to promote their sister bar across the road.</p>



<p>This campaign had a 24% conversion rate and an approximate ROMI of £1,340 in two months.</p>

<p>Signature Pub Group uses Stampede to gain valuable customer insights which help to grow customer loyalty and target marketing campaigns across their group of bars, restaurants and hotels located throughout Scotland.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>Founded in 2003 with its first venue in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket called the <em>Black Bull</em>, Signature Pub Group now has a portfolio of 24 bars, restaurants and hotels throughout Scotland, and employs over 700 members of staff. In 2018, it also launched its own small-batch brewery, Cold Town.</p>

<p>Easily gaining valuable customer insights which inform effective, targeted marketing campaigns and drive customer loyalty is a challenge for any business. As an offline, rather than online, business, Signature Pub Group was struggling to capture and act on customer data from the people who visited their venues.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Like many other businesses, Signature Pub Group offered its customers free wifi when they visited their venues. However, they were not getting very much, if any, useful customer data back from this service and were missing out on a great deal of marketing potential and customer engagement.</p>

<p>Signature Pub Group was initially attracted to B2B hospitality technology company Stampede after they were searching for an easy way for their customers to connect to WiFi without passwords. However, what started as a way to simplify the process of getting onto the internet for customers, grew into a powerful data capture tool, which Signature Pub Group now uses to market their venues to their customers.</p>



<p>“The world is now completely digital so now, when people log in to our wifi, we don’t lose them completely. When someone first comes to a venue, we send them a discount code and then another automated email is sent later on, asking if they want to join the loyalty club,” explains Steven Watson, Digital Marketing Manager at Signature Pub Group.</p>



<p>Using Stampede’s software, Steven can see everything from how many times a customer has been to a venue, to what device they used to access the wifi, as well as how much time they were on the internet, when exactly they connected and how much data they used.</p>

<p>Steven is then able to set up an automated marketing email or SMS specifically for a certain group of people.</p>



<p>“Twenty-four hours after the customer leaves, it sends them a code to come back again &#8211; a 10 or 20% off code, depending on the venue. If someone hasn’t visited in a while, it sends another discount code saying ‘we miss you’” Steven explains.</p>



<p>He can even market specifically to people who use a certain device to access the wifi. Students, for example, may be more likely to use their laptop, so Steven can use this information to target marketing specifically at them.</p>



<p>“Before Covid, we were looking at which customers go to other venues and the percentage of customers which go to which venue, so we could market as such.”</p>



<p>“We have saved lots of time using Stampede as offers are automated, so once they are set up, they are set up. We used to have a lot of loyalty clubs. On Stampede, if customers have been in a certain number of times, it sends them a notification asking them to join [our loyalty club] &#8211; we got a lot of members from that.”</p>



<p>In 2023, Steven and Signature centralised their email marketing into Stampede. Switching from Mailchimp not only saved the marketing team hours of spreadsheet labour but also saved the organisation a 4-figure sum every month.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Another key piece of centralising was the OpenTable integration. This grows and enhances their mailing lists in Stampede with invaluable data for email marketing.</p>



<p>Another of Stampede’s functions Steven regularly uses is called ‘Upsell’, which enables him to offer customers ‘pop-up’ adverts detailing the venue’s main offers, as soon as they log in to the wifi.</p>



<p>“There is a lot of potential points for customers to see offers and a lot of added value for us and the customer,” Steven explains.</p>



<p>What’s more, a few hours after a customer leaves a venue, Stampede sends an automated email asking them for a review. If the review is only 1, 2 or 3 stars, Steven and his team have time to act before the customer posts their review online. If the review is 4 or 5 stars, the customer is asked if they want to post their review on Facebook, Google or TripAdvisor.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“On the restaurant side of things, you can see reviews flooding in. That is really powerful!”</p>



<p>In addition, Stampede enables Steven to ‘sentiment check’ customer reviews. For example, he can see how many times the word ‘food’ is used in both positive and negative reviews and take action to rectify any issues in any given venue, if necessary.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Support During 2020</h2>



<p>When the Covid-19 pandemic hit and the hospitality industry was required to use Track and Trace for all customers coming into a venue, Stampede quickly built an add-on to their software that could integrate the Track and Trace requirements to the current data capture.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“I have been to a pub where they make you sign in by paper. Here, our customers can scan a QR code or sign in to wifi, so we can avoid queues. The system made it super easy. And it just worked, no hassle.”</p>



<p>“There are various other companies who offer a similar service [to Stampede’s]&nbsp; &#8211; easy to log in to WiFi and get an advert. But I wanted people’s data and to get the reviews, rather than just to send them an advert.”</p>

<p>Recently ranked&nbsp;<strong>46th in the Sunday Times 100 Fastest Private Growing Companie</strong>s, Lane7 are dominating their area of the hospitality industry. They currently operate 16 entertainment bars and venues across the UK with a continuous to open in the near future.&nbsp;</p>



<p>From bowling to table tennis, arcade games, beer pong, darts and classic American pool tables their bars make for seriously memorable nights out. There are also plans to expand on the existing concept with new activities such as mini-golf.</p>

<p>Lane7 venues utilise Stampede’s <a href="https://stampede.ai/how-it-works/wifi/">guest WiFi</a> and captive portal to grow their contact database. By delivering a <strong>94.8% opt-in rate</strong>, their database has grown by several thousand swiftly and safely even with limitations on opening during 2020.</p>



<p>Before using Stampede their online booking system was the main source of collecting customer contact details. Most bookings at Lane7 are for multiple guests, but they were only able to take the bookers’ contacts details.</p>



<p>Now they can gather the details and contact nearly all customers thanks to Stampede’s guest WiFi solution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>With a larger contact database, Lane7 can gather more customer feedback, as well as launch bigger marketing campaigns to generate repeat bookings via email and SMS. Their first SMS campaign sent through Stampede saw a <strong>17% return-to-venue rate.</strong></p>



<p>Additional feedback contributes to their growth by enhancing their online reputation and organic conversions as a result. As word-of-mouth spreads digitally, they generate additional demand and bookings. More feedback helps them spot areas to improve quickly.</p>

<p>Founded in 2021, Society is Manchester&#8217;s new culinary social adventure and a fresh addition to the city&#8217;s vibrant cultural space. Society is a hub for street food, featuring the freshest flavours from five independently-owned kitchens, a cocktail bar and a specialist taproom by an independent craft brewery, Vocation. Society has a packed programme of entertainment, featuring a rotating line-up of local and international DJs.</p>



<p>Society uses Stampede to create a branded guest WiFi sign-up and to capture customer data to grow their mailing list.</p>

<p>Creating a user-friendly, branded touchpoint is vital for brand recognition, customer loyalty and engagement. And collecting compliant customer data is always a challenging task for offline businesses.</p>



<p>Nick Gregory, co-founder at Society Manchester said that “Before we used Stampede I was wrestling with various problems. How to make this a user-friendly and importantly branded experience? And how to gather data in an easy way and act on it?”</p>



<p>In the past, they were mostly advertising their promotions and events via their social media channels and were looking for additional ways to generate awareness and bookings.</p>

<p>As they were preparing to open in the wake of lockdown, they discovered Stampede’s data capture and marketing solution.</p>



<p>They ultimately chose Stampede for three main reasons according to Nick “Number one, the branding possibilities. Number two it’s a hospitality CRM platform and number three it&#8217;s really good value.”</p>



<p>Within six months of implementing Stampede, Society gathered over 20,600 GDPR-compliant customer records. Nick comments that “It’s a pretty straightforward WiFi sign-up, very user-friendly. And it creates a branded touchpoint and is not just a sign-up.”</p>



<p>Now Society Manchester has started to use the gathered customer data to send out tailored email campaigns. This will allow them to engage with customers, and start a dialogue with editorial content, promotions and events. Their first campaign had a brilliant 40% open rate!</p>



<p>Furthermore, Society Manchester is using Stampede Bookings as a clever and innovative way to especially drive group bookings of 8 or more from their website.</p>



<p>So far, they have seen astonishing results, with over 600 group bookings made, accounting for over 8,450 covers in a period of just 3 months.</p>



<p>Nick and Society are also one of the first operators to use the Stampede / Storekit integration “It makes both platforms even more valuable for our business now.” Nick was already a fan of the two platforms separately, so to have them connected opens up more opportunities, which they are excited to explore.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Challenge</h2>



<p>With competition picking up in the neighbourhood, Zindiya were looking for a quick way to <strong>collect compliant customer data</strong> to build their mailing list.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In the past, they were getting customer contact details only from their booking system, which led to slow database growth. Shivani Kenth, Director of Zindiya Streatery &amp; Bar, explains the situation: “If one person is making the booking for four, we only get the details of the main booker. But how do we get data from other three?”&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zindiya were also looking for a way to <strong>improve their WiFi log-in experience</strong> for their customers. As Shivani remembers: “The WiFi we offered before was a bit fiddly. They had to ask for a password, rather than being able to connect automatically.”</p>

<p>Shivani came across Stampede when looking for a captive portal solution and it immediately ticked all the boxes for them.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For Shivani “It’s a <strong>simple way to get people connected to the WiFi</strong> and get their data at the same time which we can use to market to them.” Plus, returning customers will automatically be reconnected when they come back, which positively impacts their experience.</p>



<p>The setup at the venue was really easy and so far, Zindiya have been able to grow their database to more than <strong>3,700 GDPR-compliant customer contacts</strong>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They have also started to use their contact database to send out bi-weekly newsletters with customised offers, as well as personalised birthday emails. As a result, <strong>more customers come back to their venue</strong> on a regular basis.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The campaigns have already generated over <strong>£11,700 in return visits</strong> and Shivani is very pleased with the results they’re getting.</p>



<p>Having used other email providers before, Shivani also highlights the <strong>simplicity of creating branded campaigns</strong> within Stampede. “The platform is really good with different fonts and offers a wide range of colours. It’s easy to move things around and make it look nice”.</p>

<p>Shivani and her husband are already looking at implementing additional Stampede tools, such as Bookings and Loyalty, that would allow them to further expand their database.&nbsp;</p>



<p>On top of that, <strong><a href="https://stampede.ai/get-reviews/">Stampede Reviews</a></strong> is of particular interest to them. With their current solution, they have no control over the reviews that get published and are unable to automatically push them to 3rd party sites, such as Tripadvisor and Google.</p>
