There is a misconception that is hard to debunk even in today’s world… women do not like numbers and are only interested in communication.
In a data hungry world, it’s no surprise that with this misconception, only 26% of tech jobs are held by women. As data, analytics and coding are generally associated with numbers.
As a marketing professional this is something that I find troubling. It seems that marketing analytical/data focused jobs are dominated by men, while content and PR by women.
Interestingly, data focused roles, such as Data Analysts and Digital Marketing Managers, are usually better paid than content and PR roles, such as Content Manager and PR Manager.
I know this is generalising, but that’s my experience.
As today is International Women’s Day, I’m here on a mission to debunk this nonsense.
To start off, here are JUST three out of millions of women that are known for being extremely good in using data!
1. Sheryl Sandberg – Chief Operating Officer of Facebook
She is a technology executive that brings data to life, helping to dramatically boost revenues at Facebook. She joined Google as business-unit general manager in 2001 and became Facebook COO of in 2008.
Sandberg has demonstrated her value amongst other executives on earth, managing hyper-growth, through data.
2. Marissa Mayer – Ex-President and CEO of Yahoo!
She is an information technology executive, known for her work in Google as the first female engineer and also on the three-person team responsible for Google AdWords.
“Forty shades of blue”, Mayer tested 40 different shades of blue, that they were randomly shown to visitors. Google would note which colour earned more clicks – now that is real data and testing – and that’s how the blue colour we see on Gmail and other apps was chosen.
3. Cindi Howson – VP of research at Gartner and founder of BI Scorecard
She is a business intelligence and management reporting expert. Some of her work is based on advising BI tool selections and developing products exclusively hands on testing.
So do we really hate numbers?
Of course not!
I personally enjoy working with data analytics and even learned to code a bit for fun. Unfortunately, this misconception is forced on us, not only with numbers but in so many more aspects:
