In March, when we first went into lockdown, it felt like everything we had worked so hard to achieve building the business over the last decade was slipping away overnight. At my lowest ebb, I stayed in bed for a couple of days then realised, I can’t go on like this, I have to be busy. We decided to set up our &#8216;Donate a Dinner&#8217; campaign and created food parcels for Age UK and Wandsworth Council to give back to those who were at the most vulnerable. 



With Britain on lockdown, we were hit hard, losing half of our staff and some lucrative bookings, including the Cannes Film and Glastonbury Festivals. With the Donate a Dinner campaign, we reached out to our corporate clients that were still thriving — Google, Virgin Media and Facebook for example — and asked everyone to donate £3 to cover the cost of each meal. With that, we were able to deliver 861 meals a day and ensure a regular supply each week. 



By April, we had then set up logistics to do nationwide delivery of our range of corporate event boxes and feasting dinners for the public (which we have delivered over 22,000 of to date).



We are market leaders in the pop-up restaurant sector, so whilst we couldn&#8217;t operate events all year, we quickly set about creating immersive, experiential pop-up restaurants in outdoor locations to accommodate people&#8217;s demand and need to be outdoors.



Our mission has always been simple &#8211; we create memorable experiences that last a lifetime through food and drink and make people smile with our creations. On our private events, we aim to be completely client-led, creating bespoke menus and working creations for any occasion or theme, but always putting the client&#8217;s vision at the forefront of our ideas and despite going into lockdown and all the difficulties the business has faced being in the hospitality industry.



I&#8217;m so proud that we&#8217;ve still been able to keep these events going to keep people smiling &#8211; mostly virtually of course! I&#8217;m also really proud of our Donate A Dinner campaign and how quickly the team pulled together to make the logistics work for delivering food nationwide and throughout Europe which was no easy feat!



We&#8217;ve consistently worked within the rules to keep our clients happy and team working. Where most catering companies may have gone into hibernation, we are continuing to provide a service (albeit virtual) for our clients and we firmly believe fortune favours the brave, and that we&#8217;ll be the first out the traps on live events when this is over, having already won two catering contracts at Henley Regatta this summer and gone on two more venue lists as approved caterers which we&#8217;re so proud of!

When you first create a social media page for your business, it’s going to have nobody following it. Therefore, no engagement either. A really simple step is to invite all of your friends to like the page. You should also have links to your social media pages clearly displayed on your website. How to Maximise Revenue from Your Loyalty Stamp Cards

Today we are launching our &#8220;Snap box&#8221;, a remotely managed device to provide the best in class captive portal solution. Using the latest standards outlined by Apple and Google utilizing the DCHP option 114 which enforced captive portal compliance and experience. 



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-why">The Why</h3>



Running a captive portal is a must-have for all physical businesses, why? because it will deliver up to 75% of your guest traffic.



Not only this but it also provides a seriously rich dataset which tells you how long someone is in your venue, when they arrived and when they leave. 



If you are running a hotel it can also tell you which room a guest is staying in&#8230; 



So if 75% of your business comes from this data source, why does it still feel like almost all captive portals still SUCK, and why does it feel like that&#8217;s getting worse?



Guest Wi-Fi can be so powerful there are now umpteen companies out there who will do you a deal on a captive portal solution. The issue here is building a decent captive portal is really hard &#8211; In 2021 I wrote a love letter to building the worlds best captive portal &#8211; <a href="https://patrickclover.medium.com/how-to-build-the-worlds-best-captive-portal-feee1654fa8b">read here</a>. 



Captive portals have a superpower but it comes with a weak point. They give any operator the ability to track any customer within 6m of the device, but this has opened up quite a serious privacy issue.



While most operators make little use of this it is entirely possible. The main reason people can&#8217;t utilize it is that this stream of data (by design) is not connected to anything else in a business. It might get exported/imported into other systems on mass but you couldn&#8217;t use the data to say &#8220;&#8230;as soon as someone leaves the building ping them a message.&#8221;



The barrier to entry for selling captive portals is very low (given the market, supply of engineers and increasing demand). But the barrier to entry for desired user experience is very high, and has gotten higher. And because of Apple / Google&#8217;s privacy concerns, they have begun locking down the triggering of these pop-up screens. Which in the worst case will leave your guests with a broken-looking screen&#8230;

Apple has decided to do its thing and enforce operating system changes to help alleviate the privacy and experience concerns.



Apple released this spec entitled <a href="https://developer.apple.com/news/?id=q78sq5rv">&#8220;How to modernize your captive network&#8221; </a>back in 2020! Ages ago, right? Welcome to innovation in this space. Later in the year, this proposal was picked up by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) &#8211; <a href="https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc8910">read more</a>. It was then implemented in the <a href="https://developer.android.com/about/versions/11/features/captive-portal">Release of Android 11</a>



This solution is truly the hallmark of <a href="https://www.apple.com/">Apple</a>. It can control when the popup should be seen, and how long the guest&#8217;s session should last and also has the ability to show the guest how much bandwidth they are allowed to consume &#8211; cool right?



Woohoo! A captive portal solution that is bulletproof, privacy first and guest experience-centric.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-implementation-problem">The Implementation Problem</h3>



The issue with the approach outlined by Apple is that it requires a robust network setup, including on-premise infrastructure. In practice, this means you will need.

<li>DDNS support </li>



<li>Localized SSL certificates </li>



<li>A HTTP Server and web proxy</li>



<li>Content caching</li>



<li>DHCP with support Option 114</li>
</ul>



Apple wants the network owners i.e. hospitality operators to own the networking stack for this new standard to work.



The problem faced now is that very few operators will have the correct equipment on site to support these changes or few will.



And in true Apple fashion, it looks to be mandating this in a future release of iOS.



Your captive portals will ultimately become unstable when this happens, and you may have already noticed an increase in customer complaints and downtime as a result.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-oh-snap">Oh, Snap!</h3>

Saving Time Designing Emails

The tinsel is down, the streets are filled with discarded Christmas trees and you&#8217;ve finally pieced together what happened on New Year&#8217;s Eve. That can only mean one thing: 2018 is here and there&#8217;s not a damn thing you can do about it.

But that&#8217;s ok, since we here at Stampede are always looking to the future. The past is past and onward and upward.  That&#8217;s why we wanted to take this opportunity to showcase some of the trends and events we see happening with WiFi in 2018.
<h3>Still Champion &#8211; 802.11ac</h3>
Approved in 2012 and introduced to consumers the next year, 802.11ac is the current wireless standard used throughout the world. For now. Nipping at 802.11ac&#8217;s heels is the next breed of wireless standards &#8211; 802.11ax. The killer feature behind this latest standard is something called OFDMA, short for Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access. This this technology allows one access point to to host multiple devices on the same WiFi channel, which will greatly boost the capacity of routers and access points for heavy usage areas like stadiums and public spaces.
But that doesn&#8217;t mean you&#8217;ve got to trash your current network setup and start shopping. The 802.11ax standard hasn&#8217;t been approved by the IEEE yet, so it might not be until 2019 that we see the next generation of WiFi.
<h3>Intent Based Networking</h3>
IBN started popping up on the radar in 2017 and will start to get mainstream in 2018. IBN utilizes Machine Learning to make networks smarter and faster. Think of IBN as the first step towards Skynet from the Terminator movies. IBN probably won&#8217;t make much difference to you if you&#8217;re simply offering WiFi to customers in your local coffee shop, but if you&#8217;re managing WiFi as part of a larger network topology, you could see IBN making your networks in 2018 more hassle free.
<h3>5G Makes an Appearance</h3>
5G, the cellular connectivity standard that follows (naturally) 4G is finally going to get a rollout in 2018. Expect 5G to hold center stage at the <a href="https://www.ces.tech" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Consumer Electronic Show</a> that begins in January. In the United States, both Verizon and AT&amp;T are <a href="http://www.zdnet.com/article/5g-takes-center-stage-at-ces-2018-with-actual-deployments-later/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">planning rollouts for selected markets in 2018</a>. However, there is still some confusion surrounding 5G &#8211; including exactly WHAT consitutes 5G. There&#8217;s concern that unscrupulous providers might just take a gussied up 4G signal and rebrand it as 5G. Still, don&#8217;t expect WiFi to be consigned to the dust bin quite yet. There are sill 8 times as many devices connected to WiFi networks than there are to mobile networks.
<h3>Growth of Free WiFi</h3>
It&#8217;s becoming more and more common to see cities launching free WiFi initiatives and this isn&#8217;t going to be stopping any time in 2018. If fact, it&#8217;s predicted that by 2020 the <a href="https://www.vpnmentor.com/blog/free-wifi-hotspots-research/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">number of public WiFi hotspots will grow to 549 million</a> &#8211; that&#8217;s a sevenfold increase from the 2015 figure of 64 million. It&#8217;s predicted that there&#8217;s going to be so much free WiFi, in fact, that mobile providers are already starting to grow concerned.
<h3>WiFi As a Service</h3>
You&#8217;ve seen it with software packages like Office365 and Adobe Creative Suite, streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, and now even movies theaters are offering a monthly subscription model for all you can watch flicks. So why not the same thing with WiFi? Introducing WiFi-as-a-Service, the latest entry into the monthly recurring revenue model marketplace. WiFi as a service makes a lot of sense to businesses, who would rather, you know, be running their businesses instead of wrestling with persnickity WiFi controllers and updating passwords. The other advantage to this model is that firmware and other upgrades can be done automatically through the cloud. Which can come in handy the next time there&#8217;s an issue <a href="https://www.stampede.ai/blog/wpa2-breach-is-your-wifi-safe" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">like the recent WPA2 breach</a>.

<h3>Research reveals Brits only try new food &amp; drink venues 1-2 times a year</h3>
<h4>Millennials keeping “the local” tradition alive while Gen Z abandons pubs and clubs</h4>
Stampede, the Scottish start up that helps public venues turn their guest Wifi into a marketing platform, today released the results of new research into the habits of people in the UK going out pubs, bars, cafés and restaurants. <a href="https://stampede.ai/resources/british-social-routines-and-connectivity-report/">The report</a> shows that the British public are stuck in a routine of going to the same places repeatedly, that Londoners are surprisingly sociable patrons, that young people are ditching the local pub (as well as clubs) and that venue owners must do more to entice new customers. The report also dispels the myth that people are more likely to leave a bad review that a good one, and other surprising stats include the fact that 28% of Brits said they could go longer without sex than without data.
Key findings include:
<ul>
<li>Half of respondents said that they only try new venues when given a prompt (eg. a promotional deal or recommendation) – yet a quarter of people said that their favourite pub/bar puts no effort into marketing new deals and events</li>
<li>More than a third of Brits (38%) say they only try new venues to eat or drink less than once a year. The majority only try a new venue every six months or less</li>
<li>Millennials are the most regular pub and club patrons – gen Zs are the least: 25-34yr olds are the most likely to have a pub they consider their ‘local’ (85%) vs just 46% of 18-24yr olds. 30% of 25-34yr olds say they regularly go to clubs, vs just 7% of 18-24yr olds</li>
<li>Despite its reputation for being an unsociable city, Londoners are far more likely to have a pub they consider their local (77% vs a national average of 57%) and are the second most likely to know their pub landlords and restaurant owners (47%) only behind Northern Ireland (50%). Londoners are also more likely to try new venues more often – 69% said they try a new venue every month or whenever a new venue opens</li>
<li>One in five people said they only go to their favourite venue on special occasions</li>
<li>Contrary to popular belief, people seem to be just as willing to leave online reviews for positive eating experiences as well as negative. 36% of people said they had reviewed their favourite restaurant, but roughly the same percentage (35%) had left an online review for their worst eating experience</li>
</ul>
“On the whole, people are rarely as brave or adventurous as they’d like to think – we are all creatures of habit,” said Patrick Clover, Stampede founder and CEO. “People spend their entire lives going to the same venues over and over again out of routine, yet many are desperate to break the cycle. Thankfully all it takes is the right promotion, a good review or a suggestion from a friend and even the most unadventurous people will brave new experiences.”

Stampede also wanted to learn whether Brits were dependent on their mobile devices and understand their experiences of getting connected to wifi in popular venues. Related findings include:

<li>62% of people said they feel better when they are connected to public wifi, even if they have data remaining</li>
<li>33% of women said they could go longer without sex than they could data</li>
<li>A quarter of men surveyed said they could forgo love and friendship for longer than data</li>
<li>More than half of respondents reported experiencing problems connecting to public wifi in the past – many reported problems with passwords not working (25%), not being able to find the right password (23%) and registration processes taking too long (22%)</li>

“Being connected at all times has become part and parcel of modern life, and that includes drinks after work, big nights out and even dates. People want to stay connected, share their lives with others on social media and need their phones to use services like Uber to get them to and from their chosen venues. It’s a long time since Wifi was optional for venues, but sadly there’s still no accepted best practice on how to register – hence the problems people encounter with passwords hidden on blackboards which often don’t actually work. <a href="https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/homenews/19537773.staycation-rip-off-costs-holiday-accommodation-soars-41-pandemic/">UK self-catering prices are up by 41%</a> compared to 2019. Fact is, it&#8217;s now more expensive to stay in a caravan park in the middle of nowhere than it is to stay in a 5-star luxury hotel in London. This opens up huge opportunities for hotels to promote their rooms, knowing that they might be significantly cheaper than their nearby self-catering competition.

You have to show up where your potential guests are. Most of them will check out several hotel options on multiple websites and channels before making a decision. They might start with a simple <a href="https://stampede.ai/blog/5-ways-to-make-sure-your-business-is-not-missed-on-google/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google search</a> before looking for reviews and browsing on your website and socials. They will also look for offers on booking or e-commerce sites. Some might even compare both hotel and self-catering options to start off with.&nbsp;

If your business appears on as many of those potential customer touchpoints as possible, the likelihood that they decide to book with you increases.&nbsp;
